Jeremy Paxman was on brink of quitting Newsnight after child abuse debacle - Telegraph.co.uk

Eyebrows have been raised over the inquiry in which the BBC is paying the legal bills for senior executives who have hired some of Britain's most expensive media lawyers.

A source close to Mr Paxman said: "He was really angry and upset about what happened and in the end he decided to stay on out of loyalty to his colleagues, who are trying to do an honest job.

"But that doesn't mean he thinks the problem has been solved."

Sources close to the Savile inquiry have said there is no "smoking gun" linking Helen Boaden, the BBC's head of news, to the decision to scrap the investigation into the DJ's paedophilia and that Peter Rippon, the Newsnight editor, may be exonerated but criticised for allegedly misleading statements he made in September justifying his decision.

Several Newsnight staff are said to be on the verge of mutiny if Mr Rippon is reinstated. Sources close to him suggest his decision to pull the investigation into Savile has been vindicated by the later broadcast – after he had stepped aside – which falsely implicated Lord McAlpine.

A friend of Mr Rippon said: "Peter does feel he has a story to tell. He has had to take a hit to his reputation."
