Three years ago doctors ordered him to rest from one episode after he became ill with the flu. A show spokesman said last night: "Even national treasures are allowed to take a week off.
"Sir Bruce is taking a short break so he can be on top form and fighting fit for the Children in Need show at Wembley the following week."
Meanwhile, Jerry Hall's stint on the show came to an end last night as she became the second celebrity to be voted off.
The model, with her partner Anton du Beke, was forced into a dance-off with the former England cricketer Michael Vaughan and his partner, Natalie Lowe, which she lost.
The results show also featured performances by Dionne Warwick and the cast of the West End musical Top Hat.
Next Saturday night's show will be a Hallowe'en special.
