In the end it wasn't so much the hokey plot, unlikely setting or the clichés that put me off (they're all part and parcel of the genre) but the fact that almost every character, apart from Eve, was so clumsily drawn it was impossible to invest any emotion, or even belief, in their dilemma. Crickley Hall disappointed in the one area it should have been expected to excel: it didn't make the hair stand up on the back of my neck, or convince me, however temporarily, that the dark side really could exist.
