The Google Nexus 7 has taken the budget tablet market by storm, with the Asus-made slate receiving glowing reviews for its feature packed, but reasonably-priced offering.

Now it looks like the search giant has its sights set on the higher end of the market, as rumours of the Google Nexus 10 hot up.

We first heard about the possible existence of the Google Nexus 10 in July, shortly after the Nexus 7 was released, and rumours have developed from there over the past few months.

Google Nexus 10 release date

Big G has an event scheduled for October 29 in New York where it's expected to unveil the next Nexus smartphone (rumoured to be the LG Nexus 4) plus it could also announce some new Nexus 7 tablets, alongside the Google Nexus 10.

The chance of the Nexus 10 launch date being on October 29 was given more support when a source claimed they had seen an internal video from Google that showed the products that would be revealed in New York – and surprise, surprise the Nexus 10 was apparently in the clip.

In terms of a Google Nexus 10 release date, we don't have much to go on. But the tablet could be with us in a week or two, as the search giant looks to take on Apple in the run up to Christmas.

Google Nexus 10 price

We've not seen anything so far regarding a potential Google Nexus 10 price, but if the 10-inch tablet does exist we'd expect Google to price it keenly and undercut the competition.

We wouldn't be surprised if the Nexus 10 tablet started at a similar price to the iPad mini, to really outdo the Cupertino-based firm's steeply priced "budget" slate.

Google Nexus 10 specs

Early reports said the Google Nexus 10 would sport a 10-inch display, offering up an impressive, new iPad 4 beating 2560 x 1600 resolution and 299ppi pixel density.

It also seems that Samsung is behind the larger Nexus tablet, with Asus been kept out of the picture for the Nexus 10.

An image appeared on Picasa claiming to have been taken on the Google Nexus 10, and the EXIF data which accompanied the snap claimed the tablet was sporting a 5MP sensor and running a version of Jelly Bean.

Then the leaked video report, which we've already mentioned, revealed for information about the Google Nexus 10 – codenamed Mantra - saying that it will sport a 16:10 10-inch display with 300ppi and run Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

Finally a leaked quick start guide which claims to be for the Google Nexus 10 shows off some crude outlines of the potential tablet, which looks like it will follow in the design footsteps of the Galaxy Note 10.1.

Update: Some solid proof that the Google Nexus 10 may indeed exist has cropped up after Google exec Vic Gundotra posted photos from his holiday on his Google+ page, with the images listing the Nexus 10 as the device at large in the EXIF data.

Google Nexus 10 competition

The cream of the tablet crop is still the iPad, and while the iPad 3 may sit atop our best tablet PCs in the world article for now, we reckon the new iPad 4 will topple that once we've put it through our review process.

This means the Google Nexus 10 will have to pull out all the stops if its wants to topple Apple and provide the ultimate tablet experience, but it's unlikely the tablet will be priced as highly as the Cupertino firm's devices.

We wouldn't be surprised if the Nexus 10 comfortably puts the rest of Samsung's tablets to shame, climbing above the Galaxy Note 10.1 and the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1.

Asus' own range of 10-inch tabs also offer up a decent tablet experience, although with the bundled keyboard dock they tend to be on the pricey side, with the Transformer Pad Infinity top of the pops at the moment.
