Field Music
Plumb (Memphis Industries)
Who?
Two wilfully independent brothers from Sunderland David and Peter Brewis - who attack pop as if it were an art school project and once split up because they didn't want to be perceived as an band.
And the music?
Tinged with angular post-punk tics, Field Music's fourth album is very British, twitchy, literate, intellectual guitar pop that would run screaming at the first whiff of any macho posturing.
For fans of
The Fall, The Futureheads, awkwardness

Ben Howard
Every Kingdom (Island)
Who?
One of those guys for whom growing up in Devon meant not paying too much attention to contemporary music but diving instead into old Bob Dylan records, which he then adopted as in his own troubadour style.
And the music?
Howard may have sipped deep on the sound of the 1960s US West Coast but his songs have a British flavour and 'Every Kingdom' made the top ten of the UK album chart.
For fans of
Ed Sheeran, Bon Iver, serious young men brandishing acoustic guitars
William Hill odds?
